Eco Friendly Gadgets Get The Green Light

Monday, December 22nd, 2008
Shaun Parker asked:

Global warming and climate change is big in the news at present, and calls for a more sustainable way of living are being directed at consumers at every level. It has become common practice to recycle household waste, sorting through cans, bottles, plastic and paper. Not as common, but eagerly encouraged is collecting organic waste to feed the compost bin, which in turn feeds the vegetables growing in the garden to complete a small sustainable cycle.

These are small, simple things that each of us can choose to do, but sometimes the move towards a more sustainable and eco friendly way of life is out of our control. It is time to convince the manufacturers and suppliers of everyday gadgets and gizmos that they too should be adopting a greener approach to their industry. This will give the consumer the power to choose to purchase from an ethically minded business, bolstering the correct attitude towards green consumerism.

Of course, some would say that we should be doing without certain products altogether if the thought of climate change is so worrying. The truth of the fact is it is difficult to change the attitudes of the masses by being puritanical. If the lads and lassies still want their gadgets, then let them play, but give them opportunity to buy eco friendly versions of energy hungry ‘toys’. Solar power, wind power, wind-up power and kinetic charging are all ways that everyday products we have can become Eco Friendly.

One of the more exciting products to have had a trial is the kinetic mobile phone charger developed by Orange. Through a contraption that has internal weights and pullies that is strapped to your arm, a charge is generated while you dance, walk or run. Initially tested on the grooving masses at Glastonbury, it is hoped that this technology will be a success and become available to the general public. Imagine never needing to find a plug for your charger again, and the possibilities of getting super fit because you need to make a phone call!

A favourite of festival goers, campers, and those who like to escape the confines of city life, wind-up radios and torches have been on the scene for many years now. The dynamo system was originally designed to power radios in South Africa, to enable poor communities to have access to radio even without access to batteries. This technology is also ideal for emergency situations where sources of power are not available; and for equipping places that are visited infrequently, such as holiday homes or log cabins.

When it comes to solar power, it’s shocking how long we’ve been living with the technology and probably barely noticed. The common calculator has been using the sun to charge its energy cells for years. The technology has progressed to the point where a company has manufactured a solar charger for laptop computers, compact enough to carry wherever you go just to make sure you never miss another email! Solar energy is also being used in garden trinkets, such as outdoor fairy lights and garden lanterns.

Harnessing the energy of the wind is generally considered for use on a large scale, along with tidal power. Of course, if thousands of units of energy are needed to power all the energy consumption of a house, a turbine is needed, but smaller options are available to power a gadget fetish. Compact 24 volt wind generators are available to charge a leisure battery, the energy from which can be used just like the juice that comes from a household socket. The generators are incredibly popular on boats and caravans as a reliable and transportable source of energy; and there is no reason why harnessing renewable power shouldn’t be used in the home too.

Where to find Reps for Eco-friendly or Environmentally safe products/ services?

Thursday, December 11th, 2008
passionpartiesbydonna asked:

I’m looking for businesses or consultants that sell eco friendly products or environmentally safe products/ services in CT, MA or RI. If you know of any businesses or dealers please post their website.

Thank you
Donna
I posted this because I wanted referrals from those who actually did business with some of these environmentally friendly businesses. I’ve looked in many directories.
The reason I’m asking is because I’m putting on an Energy Conservation Economic Fair in Plainfield, CT on Oct 4th. I’m looking for vendors who want a FREE spot to promote their products or services. I found a Green Builder, Alternative Fuels, Sustainable energy etc… I’m just not able to find local reps that sell biodegradable products or products safe for the environment besides the few I do have. Please post as many links as possible. I’ll check them out. People can send me brochures, business cards too. I’ll put them on a table for people to check out their Eco friendly products and services.

Are you an Eco-friendly Traveler? Read These Tips!

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008
Kathy Steinemann asked:

Scientists have spoken: Mankind is destroying the planet. It seems simple enough to cut carbon emissions while we are at home, but what about vacations or business trips? You can be kind to the environment even while you travel.

Here are some tips that will steer you in the right direction.

Plan and Prepare Well in Advance of Your Travel Dates

Forego paper tickets and book electronically via telephone or online. You will save paper (and time).

Discontinue the newspaper while you are gone or have it delivered to the local library or doctor’s office instead.

Before setting out on your trip, reduce the heat on the hot water tank, lower the thermostat, and unplug all electronics (like cable boxes, cordless telephones, and DVD players).

Vehicles Have a Huge Impact on the Environment

If possible, try to use public transportation or airport shuttles. Rent a vehicle only as a last resort.

If a rental is your only option, try to reserve a compact vehicle that will be easy on gas. Some rental agencies even provide electric cars or hybrids.

Before you head out, check tire pressures. Underinflated tires cause increased gas consumption.

Instead of using the air conditioner, open a car window when feasible.

Drive conservatively. Save fuel with a light foot on the accelerator while staying well within the speed limit.

Avoid idling your vehicle. If it will be sitting for more than 60 seconds while you load luggage or run an errand, switch off the ignition.

Participate in bus, train, or walking tours when available.

See if you can find a bike rental and get out in the fresh air.

Hotel or Bed and Breakfast Accommodations

Book lodging that is centrally located to your intended activities.

Make a point of reserving rooms in an establishment that promotes eco-friendly practices. Be sure to ask the innkeeper or booking clerk what they are doing to protect the environment.

Leave a note for the maid. Tell her that you want to use hotel towels for a couple of days before sending them to be laundered.

Don’t turn on the radio or TV unless you are really paying attention to it.

Leaving the room? Turn down the heat and/or air conditioning and make sure that the coffee maker, iron, TV, and other electrical devices are switched off.

If your hotel or inn has an elevator, ignore it and use the stairs instead. Your body will thank you for the exercise, and you will be doing your share to conserve electricity.

More Eco-Friendly Travel Tips

Never use regular alkaline batteries. Instead, pack enough rechargeables to get you through a complete day, along with a battery charger. You might also want to investigate the purchase of a solar charger.

If you must recharge your cell phone, game console, or laptop, don’t leave it charging overnight. Start early enough in the day or evening so that you can monitor the progress and shut down the device when it is up to 100%.

Instead of working out on a motorized stair climber or treadmill in the hotel gym, put on your walking shoes and go for a jog or walk in the fresh air.

Disposable or regular film cameras are not environmentally-friendly. Invest in a digital instead. Prices are becoming more reasonable every day and the capabilities are rapidly improving.

Avoid individually-wrapped hand cleaner packets, disposable razors, and other one-use items. Stick with smaller-sized reusable and/or refillable products.

An all-in-one cleaner can take the place of shampoo, laundry detergent, and hand cleaner. It will save room (and weight) in your luggage.

Speaking of weight in your luggage: pack light. It will conserve gas on your way to the airport, and will result in fuel savings for all other types of transport while you travel.

Avoid buying coffee or snacks in disposable containers. Pack your own mug - and if you want coffee to go, ask the restaurant or snack bar to fill it for you.

Be a good eco-citizen and pick up any trash you discover while you travel.

These tips are just a beginning. Be eco-conscious in everything you do, and you will find other ways to help save our beautiful planet.

Are teens interested in stuff like organic, eco, and animal friendly products like lipbalm?

Monday, December 8th, 2008
Euo R asked:

I want to start a line of cosmetics which are organic, eco friendly, and cruelty free mainly lipbalm. I even have vegan alternatives. A 1/2 oz tin of vegan. lipbalm would be about 1.50-2.00
1/2 oz of vegetarian would be about 3.00
A glass jar instead of tin would be like 50 cents more.
A chap stick form would be about 2.50 for vegan. and 3.50 for vegetarian
Each one is has fragrance and the chapstick wax is the most expensive followed by the vegg then vegan. Do you think this is reasonable since its all eco friendly, organic, and cruelty free? Would teens be interested in this?
