Are companies just using the Go Green-fad to their advantage?

I don’t want to make a negative out of a positive, but I work at a store where the environmental cause has become like a commercial slogan everywhere I look.
Brands advertising that they’re improving their product to be earth friendly, such as Poland Spring’s gimmick of slimmer bottles to use less waste
–Funny they don’t advertise 2oz less water per bottle (or 48oz for a case.) Bottled-water companies also don’t mention that their water is nearly equivalent to what you can get out of a tap and that your only wasting thousands of tons of plastic by buying it in the first place. Something third world countries would be enraged by such un-needed luxury.
And I could go on with dozens of other products I witness abusing the title eco-friendly,
–but I’d like your opinion on if companies really care for making changes or are they turning a cause into a fad by these popular movies and shows out like 11th Hour and An Inconvenient Truth (when 2 years ago they hadn’t shown major concern)?
