Going green with the DH and kids?

Friday, March 27th, 2009
Mommy to 4 beautiful kids asked:

Living in a house with 4 young kids, my husband and I always try and set the right example for our young ones. This year, our kids being aged 8, down to 3, we decided to make some family resolutions, or goals if you will. We decided this weekend, since it will be bad weather to go anywhere, to take a few hours out of Saturday or Sunday and sort through everyones clothes, shoes and toys. Everything that is in good shape but will not be used in our house anymore for whatever reason will be given to the Salvation Army. We also decided to support a child from World Vision for $35.00 a month. And finally, we have decided to GO GREEN! I would like to start using eco-friendly cleaning products, and buying more organic foods. Of course we can’t be sure that anything these days is 100% organic but I figure I’m better off buying what they claim to be as ‘organic’ then what is sprayed with preservatives and various other chemicals. My question to you is, what kind of eco- friendly cleaning products should I use. Also, are their any other ideas/tips to share regarding the whole ‘going green’ theme with young children?

Much appreciated, happy new year!

What do about lack of recycling in my town?

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009
vvozgodvv asked:

This year my friends and I have been trying to go green - buying organic food and clothing, switching to eco-friendly house cleaning products, fluorescent lights, bio bags, etc; but I still wish to do more. I’ve noticed that my town does not have “recycling” days so I called my town municipal building to inquire and spoke to a very sympathetic person who runs the recycling in my town - who faces the same angst I do. Currently, there is one way to recycle paper - bring it to the Marcal toilet paper factory - but there is currently no way to recycle plastic and glass, unless I drive it over to another town.

How should I go about finding local factories/business and see if they are willing to to accept recyclable materials and what way if possible to get my neighbors involved?

Which is better? When disposing of non-recyclable plastic like bread-bags, should you burn it or toss it out?

big dog lover asked:

I recycle everything I can, like the plastic grocery bags, and milk jugs and detergent plastics.
But, I do not know what the best alternative is for disposing of other items like the wrappings on food, and household products, and other store bought goods.
We do have the option of burning outside in our area. I hope to get a good suggestion or option to get rid of these type of plastics the best, and most eco-friendly way possible. Thank you!
Not the grocery bags… (I do take my own totes most times, or bring the ones I have from home.)

I am asking about the other type of plastics. Thanks! :)

Sunday, March 15th, 2009
Living Life in the Saddle asked:

What degrees would be necessary in order to work as a green consultant?

Meaning somebody who advises businesses and people on what changes, and products they can use to build, or make their business or home more eco-friendly.

I’m planning on getting a business degree, and possibly a degree in environmental conservation

i am currently living in japan, i have seen so many eco friendly effort here. epically before the g8 summit,
but see what they came up with?
they set a target at reduce co2 to haft in 2050!!!

and every company producing eco friendly products here seem to have only one same target.
get people to buy their stuff as much as it possible!!!
i am no kidding.
they all say something like, help save the earth by buy, buy, buy and please don’t forget to buy this too!!!

people talk very little about re-use, and “say nothing” about re-duce!!!

people talk a lot about recycle because those big company behind recycle biz make big money, then again buy buy buy and buy our eco friendly product!

how is the going green movement in your country doing?
is it all about gov’s pr and big company making money like what i see here in japan?
